If you’re in Alabama and are preparing for a significant home remodel, you’ve come to the right place. Because as local remodeling experts, we understand that when you know what to expect and how to prepare for your remodeling project, the process goes smoother and more efficiently.
You may not realize that a significant remodel requires some preparation on your part before professionals ever arrive at your home. This preparation is critical if you want the process to go as smoothly as possible.
Before we discuss tips for preparing your home for a significant remodel, let’s define what we mean by a “significant remodel.” When we use this term, we’re referring to the big projects.
Here are some examples:
- Replacing cabinets
- Opening walls up
- Redoing your kitchen or bathroom
- Adding onto your house
- Finishing your basement
1. Move Stuff Out of the Way
Professional remodelers like us need a clear workspace to do the job efficiently. That’s why it’s important to move furniture, small appliances, glassware, cleaning supplies, and anything else that could be damaged or get in the way before we start.
While we can help move furniture (as long as it’s not as large as a grand piano), we recommend handling it yourself since we’re not professional movers.
If we’re remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, please empty your cabinets and remove personal items from countertops or other surfaces. You should also put away mirrors, glassware, and other fragile items that might prevent us from doing our job.
2. Make Sure We Have Access to Your House
Providing us with a spare key ensures we can get to work without requiring you to answer the door each time we arrive.
We’re happy to supply a lockbox with a secure combination. The lockbox sits outside, and we’ll place your key inside it every evening.
Rest assured, only authorized workers will have access to the key or the lockbox combination.
3. Let Us Know Your Availability
We want to accommodate your schedule. Our standard work hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday but occasionally, we may need to stay later to complete a task. And we’re willing to work weekends if needed. If these hours don’t work for you, let us know. We’re flexible and will work with you to find a solution that suits everyone.

4. Understand That the Process Takes Time
Quality remodeling takes time, often more than you might expect. From ordering materials to inspections and planning, there are a lot of steps involved.
We’ll provide a time estimate upfront, but unexpected issues—like hidden structural problems or necessary repairs—can extend the timeline.
Often, significant remodels take at least two months, depending on the scope of the project and any unexpected issues that come up.
5. Expect Dust and Dirt During the Process
Remodeling is messy, especially during demolition. While we’ll clean up at the end of each day, the nature of the work generates dust and debris.
We’ll take measures to minimize the impact on your home:
- Protecting floors with paper and plastic
- Sealing adjacent rooms with plastic sheeting, including taped slits for access
- Covering major furniture that remains in the area
Keep in mind, however, that some dust will settle, and windows may become dirty over time. If you have hardwood floors, you might need additional cleaning or refinishing once the project is complete.
