Completing a home remodeling project might seem like an overwhelming task. The trick is to break it up into a series of steps. The first step is getting an honest, accurate estimate, so you know what to expect throughout the process (and how much it will cost).
In this post, we’re talking about the step before the first step (think of it as step 0): Knowing what to expect from your estimate.
With that in mind, here are answers to several common questions that you may have about getting an estimate for your next home remodeling project.
How long does it typically take for you to give me an estimate?
At Little Cahaba Remodeling, we try to get you estimates as fast as possible, while being honest and accurate. That said, the time it takes to get one depends on what you want to do. For smaller remodeling projects, we can typically give you an estimate within 24-48 hours.
For larger remodeling projects, this will likely take a week. While we shoot for getting estimates within seven days, sometimes it can be longer, but often it’s shorter.
Note: Here are some examples of what we consider “larger remodeling projects”:
- Replacing cabinets
- Opening walls up
- Redoing your kitchen or bathroom
- Adding onto your house
- Finishing your basement
How does the process of getting an estimate work?
Here’s a breakdown of our estimation process:
- Talk with us on the phone, so we can understand what you want out of your remodeling project.
- Schedule a time for us to come by your home.
- Walk us through your project, providing details about what you want us to do (this happens before or during the meeting).
- Receive an estimate that includes a breakdown of the budget (again, this will take at least a day).
For a smaller project, we’ll give you a hard price.
For a larger project, you’ll get a detailed budget. Material prices, especially, can be adjusted in the budget, depending on what you want us to use. We often ask for your wish list, we price that wish list, and we cut it back if necessary.

What should I have ready before reaching out for an estimate?
Whether you use us or another remodeler, you need to have a general understanding of what you want (especially in terms of how you want your project to look).
If you don’t have a good idea of what you want, we can recommend designers and architects who can help you get a better understanding of your vision.
What are some common surprises that can make the final price higher than expected?
In our experience, homeowners tend to be surprised by how much things actually cost.
This might be because they’ve seen incorrect pricing info online. Plus, some homeowners don’t account for higher prices due to inflation, the changing costs of materials, and other factors.
How can I tell if an estimate is fair?
If you’re not sure if our estimate is fair, feel free to get a second opinion.
What are some red flags that I should look out for when receiving an estimate?
Don’t hire a contractor if you receive an estimate that does not include:
- Payment terms
- A scope of work
At Little Cahaba Construction, we will always provide these.
Also, don’t hire a contractor if they ask to be paid in full upfront.
However, asking for smaller amounts upfront is totally fine. We ask for some money upfront, often to order materials and help get the project moving, and so do other legitimate contractors.
What are the most common delays that can prevent me from getting my estimate?
Here are some reasons why your estimate could take longer than expected:
- Waiting on subcontractor and vendor pricing
- Changes to plans or the scope
- Extreme weather
What should I always do when getting a remodeling estimate?
Always ask for references. A legitimate remodeling company will always provide you with references, so you know they are who they say they are.
That’s certainly the case with Little Cahaba Construction–we’re happy to provide you with references from our customers.
